Urodzony w Sewilli w 1976 r. w rodzinie syryjsko-palestyńskiej, pierwsze 11 lat życia spędził w Syrii, gdzie w bardzo młodym wieku rozpoczął naukę muzyki. Później kształcił się – jako samouk – w Hiszpanii, wreszcie w 1994 r. rozpoczął studia
gry na violi da gamba u Ventury Rico w Conservatorio Superior de Música „Manuel Castillo” w Sewilli. Kontynuował naukę w Szwajcarii – prestiżowej Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Bazylea) u Paola Pandolfo oraz w Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana (Lugano) u Vittoria Ghielmiego. Równolegle ze studiami muzycznymi Fahmi Alqhai uzyskał również stopień naukowy w dziedzinie stomatologii na Uniwersytecie w Sewilli.
Artysta jest założycielem Accademia del Piacere, którą prowadził podczas wielu nagrań płytowych, nagradzanych i wydanych przez wytwórnie Glossa, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi oraz Alqhai & Alqhai (własne wydawnictwo). To m.in. albumy Muera Cupido, wyróżniony Opus Klassik Award 2020 w kategorii „Best Solo Vocal Recital” (opera), Les Violes du Ciel et de l’Enfer (nominacja do International Classical Music Awards 2011) oraz Le Lacrime di Eros (2009 Prelude Classical Music Award). W 2012 r. Alqhai zdobył nagrodę Giraldillo za najlepszą muzykę na Bienal de Flamenco w Sewilli za swoją czwartą płytę Las idas y las vueltas, nagraną wraz z wokalistą flamenco znanym jako Arcángel. W 2016 r. ponownie został laureatem tej nagrody w kategorii innowacji za album Diálogos, zarejestrowany z artystką flamenco Rocío Márquez.
W 2014 r. nagrał dla wytwórni Glossa swoją pierwszą płytę jako solista z repertuarem na violę da gamba, A piacere. Jego nowatorskie podejście do tego instrumentu, które zaprezentował na tym nagraniu, zostało ciepło przyjęte w Hiszpanii, Niemczech i całej Europie. W 2016 r. w tej samej wytwórni wydał bardzo osobisty album solowy – The Bach Album (nagrody: GEMA, Scherzo i Melómano). W 2018 r. artysta otrzymał Medal Miasta Sewilli.
Od początku kariery współpracuje z najlepszymi zespołami muzyki dawnej na świecie. Jest stałym członkiem wielu uznanych zespołów, takich jak Hespèrion XXI (Jordi Savall) czy Il Suonar Parlante (Vittorio Ghielmi). Jest także członkiem-założycielem More Hispano (Vicente Parrilla). Z tymi zespołami, a także z Accademia del Piacere i jako solista regularnie występuje w najważniejszych salach koncertowych Europy, Ameryki Południowej, jak też Japonii i Stanów Zjednoczonych.
W roli solisty Fahmi Alqhai koncertował ze znakomitymi orkiestrami, takimi jak Orquesta Nacional de España, Real Filharmonía de Galicia, Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne (Michel Corboz), Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla i Al Ayre Español. Wykonuje również muzykę współczesną i jazz, grając z artystami tej miary co Uri Caine. Fahmi Alqhai ma w swoim dorobku wiele nagrań dla wytwórni płytowych, takich jak Alia Vox, Glossa, Winter & Winter, Tactus, Arsis Audio i Enchiriadis, a także dla telewizji i radia w Europie, Azji i Ameryce. Od 2009 r. jest dyrektorem artystycznym Festival de Música Antigua w Sewilli (FeMÀS), najstarszego i najważniejszego festiwalu muzyki dawnej w Hiszpanii. Fahmi Alqhai is considered one of the most brilliant and esteemed players of the viola da gamba in the world today, as well as one of the most recognised interpreters of early music, for his personal and communicative approach to historical repertories.Born in Seville, Spain, in 1976 to a Syrian father and Palestinian mother, he spent the first eleven years of his life in Syria, where he began to study music at a very young age. Later he studied – self-taught – in Spain until he entered the Conservatory of Music ‘Manuel Castillo’ in Seville in 1994 to study the viola da gamba with Ventura Rico. He furthered his studies in Switzerland – at the prestigious Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Basel) with Paolo Pandolfo and at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana (Lugano) with Vittorio Ghielmi. Over the course of his musical studies, Fahmi Alqhai also obtained a degree in dentistry from the University of Seville.
He is founder of Accademia del Piacere, which he has conducted on many awardedCDs for Glossa, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi and his own label (Alqhai & Alqhai), such as: Muera Cupido, winner of the Opus Klassik Award 2020 for the Best Solo Vocal Recital (Opera), Les Violes du Ciel et de l’Enfer (nominated for the International Classical Music Awards 2011), and Le Lacrime di Eros (2009 Prelude Classical Music Award). In 2012, Alqhai won the Giraldillo prize awarded to Best Music at the Bienal de Flamenco 2012 in Seville, for the music of his fourth CD Las idas y las vueltas, together with flamenco vocalist Arcángel. In 2016, he won also the Giraldillo for Innovation for Diálogos, with Rocío Márquez.
In 2014, he recorded for Glossa his first CD for solo viol, A piacere, whose innovative concept of the instrument was warmly welcome in Spain, Germany and throughout Europe. In 2016, he launched his most personal work as a soloist, The Bach Album, for the label Glossa (winning awards: GEMA, Scherzo and Melómano). In 2018, he received the Medal of the City of Seville. Since a young age, he has been invited to work with the most internationally renowned
early music ensembles. He is a regular member of numerous recognised groups such as Hespèrion XXI (Jordi Savall) and Il Suonar Parlante (Vittorio Ghielmi). He is also a founding member of More Hispano (dir. Vicente Parrilla). With these ensembles, as well as with Accademia del Piacere and as a soloist, Fahmi Alqhai regularly offers concerts in Europe, Japan, the United States and South America’s best concert halls.
As a soloist, Fahmi Alqhai has performed with important orchestras such as the Spanish National Orchestra, the Galicia Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne (Michael Corboz), Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, and Al Ayre Español, among others. He has also made his entrance in the fields of contemporary music, as well as jazz, with artists such as Uri Caine. Fahmi Alqhai has made numerous recordings for record labels such as Alia Vox, Glossa, Winter & Winter, Tactus, Arsis Audio, and Enchiriadis, as well as for television and radio in Europe, Asia and America. Since 2009, he has been Artistic Director of the Early Music Festival of Seville (FeMÀS), Spain’s oldest and most important early music festival. In 2020, he received a Leonardo Grant (BBVA Foundation) for the Colombina project, devoted to the 15th-century manuscript.
