On the one hand, overwhelming excess, on the other, hunger – for experiences, memories, art. Young composers, like each of us, face both sides of human existence. Ensemble OMN conducted by Szymon Bywalec will present works by Mateusz Ryczek and Paweł Malinowski during the first of its two concerts at Musica Polonica Nova. Both composers belong to the young generation, and perhaps this prevents them from indifference to the biggest problems of today.

Mateusz Ryczek is a graduate of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław, where he studied with Grażyna Pstrokońska-Nawratil, Cezary Duchnowski and Zbigniew Karnecki. In Dopamine – a concerto for trumpet, which had its first performance at last year’s Festival of Premieres – he uses techniques explored during his doctoral studies, employing algorithms and the phenomenon of emergence. The composer weaves a canvas on which the dramaturgy of the work is be presented, having been inspired by the widespread phenomenon of mental stress caused by excess stimuli, the so-called overstimulation.

Paweł Malinowski, associated with the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Kraków, is the author of the piece through the youth of these things, premiered at Cricoteka in Kraków in 2022. He openly admits his inspirations have been literary. He took as the motto a fragment of the story Who Killed My Father by Édouard Louis: “Our memories contain more objects than people. You lived your youth through the youth of these objects.” The piece uses forms of instrumental theatre – during performance, the stage is constantly transformed, and the percussionists use objects not usually seen in concert contexts.
